Teaching offers

The CIUHCT- University of Lisbon Group includes members who are professors and researchers at the Unit for the History and Philosophy of Science (Secção Autónoma de História e Filosofia das Ciências - SAHFCT), an educational unit located at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Jointly they offer courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Besides several introductory courses at the freshman level (see plan of courses under the heading “Formação Cultural Social e Ética – FCSE, http://hfc.fc.ul.pt/licenciatura_apresentacao.htm) they offer also a Minor in History and Philosophy of Science, corresponding to one-semester of courses, 30 ECTS. Students complete the Minor by getting approval in 6 courses: Science and Culture, Scientific Controversies, Science and Art, Scientific and Technological Knowledge in Portugal, Science from Antiquity to the Renaissance, From the Scientific Revolution to Big Science, Themes from Contemporary Philosophy of Science, Knowledge and Philosophy of Science (see plan of courses under the heading “Minor em História e Filosofia das Ciências" at http://hfc.fc.ul.pt/licenciatura_apresentacao.htm)

The MSc Program is completed in 2 years, corresponding to 30 ECTS/year. The first year includes 10 courses (6 ECTS each and 3h/week). The second year is dedicated to the preparation of the MSc thesis. The coordinator of this program is Ana Simões.

  • Philosophy of Scientific Knowledge;
  • Historiography of Science;
  • Selected Topics in the History of Science;
  • Philosophy of Mathematics;
  • History of Science, from the 18th to the 20th century;
  • Epistemology and Philosophy of Science in the 20th century;
  • History of Science and Technology in Portugal;
  • Science, Ethics and Politics;
  • Philosophy of the Natural Sciences.

A PhD program is also offered including the approval in some courses during the 1 year: at least 2 courses, up to a maximum of 5. The number of courses to be taken depends on the scientific area of the candidates’ MSc: if the candidate holds a MSc degree in history and philosophy of science – approval in 2 courses is mandatory; if the candidate holds a MSc degree in either history or philosophy – approval in 3 to 5 courses is mandatory; if the candidate holds a MSc degree in any other scientific area – approval in 5 courses is mandatory). Other situations, not included in the former ones, will be assessed by the

The CIUHCT- New University of Lisbon Group includes members who are professors and researchers at the Department of Applied Social Sciences (Departamento de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas - DCSA), an educational department located at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Lisbon.
Jointly they offer courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Besides several optional introductory courses at the freshman level (History of Science, History of Technology, Bio-Ethics, Introduction to Contemporary Cultural Topics), they offer a mandatory course in Science, Technology, and Society (with 8 modules: Risk, Safety and Responsability/Ethics; Science, Technology and Gender; Sustainable Networks: Environment and Society; War and Peace: Einstein, Bohr e Oppenheimer; The Futur of the Bio and of the Nano; And Man created Cyborg; Information Society; Science, Technology and Cinema). 
They also offer a PhD program on History, Philosophy and Heritage of Science and Technology.

The PhD program includes a two semesters’ course, followed by three years devoted to research and writing of the PhD dissertation. The mandatory courses included in the program are:

  • Historiography;
  • European History;
  • History of Science;
  • History of Technology;
  • Philosophy of Science and Technology;
  • History of Science and Technology in Portugal;
  • Scientific and Industrial Heritage;
  • Representations of Technoscience.

Accordingly to the PhD student’s background and research topic, students may be asked to follow other courses. During the second semester students are asked to develop their research project, which will be assessed by a scientific commission. Once the research project is approved students have three years to conclude their PhD dissertation. Both CIUHCT research groups signed several Erasmus Agreements.
